But a couple weeks later, I realize this is a fantastic movie and likely to move up to a masterpiece rating. I am going to see it multiple times over in my life and I think it is truly worth checking out if you like good films. Shape of Water original script. Was bringing back Palpatine (or introducing someone new at the last minute) really the only option they had here? My expectation after watching The Last Jedi was that Kylo was going to be the main bad guy of the next movie. That seemed like the whole point of killing off Snoke and having Kylo replace him as Supreme Leader in the first place. That was the twist, right? You thought you were watching the redemption arc of another Darth Vader, but it was actually the origin story of another Emperor. Rich even commented in the review of The Last Jedi that he thought Snoke's death was so blatantly telegraphed because in Rian Johnson's mind, the real twist in that scene was Kylo refusing to turn good and deciding to take Snoke's place instead. The Last Jedi burned a lot of bridges in terms of setting up story threads for the final movie, but Kylo is going to be the final boss seemed like the one plot point it was genuinely committed to building toward. And personally speaking, I was actually pretty excited by the idea. Making the Emperor character this conflicted and nuanced villain who we'd spent an entire trilogy getting to know, rather than just a cartoonishly evil monster who barely shows up until the final film, seemed like a novel and interesting direction to take a Star Wars movie in. The fact that we'd seen this character's rise to power, seen him already turn away from all these different opportunities for redemption, would've added an entirely different complexion to the final showdown than in either of the previous trilogies. And it should go without saying that I would've absolutely loved to see what an actor of Adam Driver's caliber could do with a character like that. I was utterly disappointed when, only a few minutes into The Rise of Skywalker, Palpatine had returned and Kylo had already been reduced to nothing more than a henchman again. Not just because the storyline itself was dumb, but because of all the potential for a more interesting storyline that had been wilfully squandered for the sake of bringing back a villain people recognize.

I left the theatre oddly disappointed, yet at the same time, I almost wanted to see the movie again. My girlfriend hates this type of movie, but even she offered an hour's worth of discussion on the mythological/purgatorial themes afterwards.
It wasn't until I had really thought about the movie and discussed it that I came to fully appreciate it. Apart from its interesting cinematography, poetic dialogue, and excellent acting, where the movie comes into its own is in the manifold interpretations that can be gleaned.
There was a lot of depth to the movie that many might write off as pretense just because of the noir flair and the purple passages of dialogue. Even I had the feeling that Eggers was trying extremely hard to make a modern classic. But at the end of the day, this was one of the most interesting and entertaining films I have seen in a long time.

I believe Winslow doesnt even know who he is and adapts his personality to those he interacts with as well as the people he kills.
